Meet the Team: Poppy & Penelope

There is a long-held theory that the Old English Sheepdog may share ancestry with the South Russian Ovcharka, an ancient flock-guarding dog developed to deter large predators. Today, the Old English Sheepdog is considered a vulnerable native breed—a British breed with declining registration numbers—and is listed as such by the Royal Kennel Club. Historically used as a working dog to drive and protect stock, the Old English Sheepdog retains strong guardian instincts paired with an exceptionally stable, family-oriented temperament. At our home, where cougar and bear are present, Old English Sheepdogs play an important role in protecting our Fell ponies, which are themselves a rare and vulnerable native breed. Our dogs patrol the property perimeter, remain home-bound and bonded to family, and coexist peacefully with all livestock. In this way, we rely on a vulnerable heritage breed to help protect another—demonstrating how traditional working dogs still serve a meaningful purpose in modern conservation-based farming systems
